Support Consulting

Scientific Methods is an internationally recognized microbiology laboratory known for our expertise and commitment to the field of Microbiology. With over 60 years of combined consulting and research experience, we have participated in and found solutions for many bench studies, pilot-scale studies and product method validations. We provide a wide range of testing and consulting services in aerobic and anaerobic microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, mycology, virology and parasitology.

We have developed and participated in many validation studies with various local, state, federal, and private entities including the EPA. One of the validation studies that we performed was by the EPA Microbiological Alternate Test Procedure (ATP) protocol, where we conducted a study for a client that resulted in E. coli detection in freshwater within eight hours.

The following are some examples of past studies that we have done for our clients:

EPA ATP Study for approval of KwikCount EC to detect E. coli in beach water (Goshen, Indiana):

A nationwide survey was conducted by collecting 10 samples of fresh water from beaches in different states where we compared the recovery/precision/sensitivity/specificity of Kwikcount EC with modified mTEC agar (US EPA Method 1603). The EPA has since approved Kwikcount EC for monitoring E. coli fresh beach water.

Removal of E. coli and coliphages in pilot-scale filtration of drinking water and wastewater (Toronto, Canada):

Scientific Methods provided concentrated spiking of E. coli and model virus MS2 stocks, field consultation, and sample collection/analysis.

Water reuse pilot study (Long Island, New York):

Scientific Methods completed a pilot-scale wastewater reuse project in Suffolk County, New York, as Suffolk County had a goal of reducing the effluent discharges to sensitive estuarine and marine areas. We directed and implemented microbial challenge studies at the Advanced Water Treatment Facility in Riverhead, New York, to determine the microbial removal efficiencies of cloth filtration, membrane microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and UV disinfection of secondary effluent using model bacteria and viruses.

Bench-scale research on microbial inactivation by treatment technologies (Tampa, Florida):

Scientific Methods completed a bench study on microbial inactivation using UV and Ozone for water treatment purposes.

A pilot study for removal of E. coli for drinking water by ultrafiltration systems (East Chicago, IN):

Scientific Methods provided concentrated spiking E. coli stocks, field consultation, and sample collection/analysis.

Determination of the impact of chemical exposure on chemical sensor materials (South Bend, Indiana):

Materials were exposed inside a chamber with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or chlorine gas to determine the deterioration overtime by microscopy.
